Stanisław Dybowski, a musicologist and a music critic specialising in piano playing, an outstanding expert on piano art and Chopin music interpretation, the author of books on Ferenc Liszt and Raul oczalski and the bulky Dictionary of Polish Pianists, has now published The Laureates of the Chopin Competitions in Warsaw in which he gives vivid descriptions of the pianists and their playing against a backdrop of consecutive Chopin Competitions.
Dybowski draws portraits of the artists through copious quotations from Polish press reviews of their Competition performances and later appearances in Poland. He adds his own opinion on each pianist’s art of interpretation and reveals many professional secrets. Readers will be moved by the dramatic fate of some laureates.
The book contains many important illustrations, including unique photographs and reproductions of programmes, posters, record vignettes, etc. It also has a supplement containing an index of the laureates and of the jurors and satirical drawings of the Competition. All this makes compulsive reading.
