The Selene Music Company was established in 1991 by musicologist Stanisław Dybowski and his musician brother Michał. At first the company mainly released CDs with world classical music (Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, etc.). The owners, however, soon realised that music lovers might find Polish music attractive, especially the forgotten works. Thus the recordings of works by Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński, Karol Lipiński, Franciszek Lessel, Mikołaj Gomółka, Stanisław Moniuszko, Józef Wieniawski, Aleksander Michałowski, Raul Koczalski, Karol Mikuli, Ignacy Friedman and other composers have been added to the company's catalogue. Selene is the only music publisher in the world to have released CDs with the complete piano works of Ignacy Jan Paderewski critically acclaimed in Poland and internationally. The company is currently putting out a series of CDs called “Great Chopinesque Traditions in Poland” with historical interpretations of Chopin’s music by Polish performers recorded since as early as 1905. Thanks to Selene-released CDs, music lovers can listen to the playing of Aleksander Michałowski, Raul Koczalski, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Ignacy Friedman, Maurycy Rosenthal and many other pianists. Selene is also the only Polish music publisher to have released Johann Sebastian Bach’s complete organ works, performed by one musician, on 14 CDs. Since 1998 Selene has been publishing books on music-related subjects. So far the company has produced Raul Koczalski. Chopin Performer and Composer and A Dictionary of Polish Pianists. Another two, Aleksander Michałowski. A Book About a Great Chopin Performer and Laureates of Chopin Competitions, are currently being prepared for publication. The latter will appear in October this year to coincide with the 15th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
